How can I start to understand the mentality of a “workaholic?”?

Good Girl asked:

My husband is a great guy and we have been married for over 3 yrs. now. He has been an over-achiever since high school and is doing unbelievably well for his age. However, he used to work 8-6:30 or 7 with weekends off. Now it is stretching until 8am-8:30 or 9 and he is also having to go in a couple weekends a month. He feels 100% that he is doing this for his family and that he does not enjoy working. I am very lucky to be able to stay home with our toddler. However, I just can’t understand his mentality. I think if you give a company 200% they will “expect” that forever. We relocated to a city 2 years ago where we don’t know a soul and staying home with a 2 yr old and not knowing anyone can be a very lonely place. I love staying home, and don’t want to work. But, is all this time really necessary? They love him at his job and I don’t think leaving 1 hour early every night will make a difference. Am I being selfish? Can anyone relate? Thanks :)

How do I stop being a workaholic?

TokyoGirl asked:

I’m currently working 2 jobs, and I like both. Whenever someone says something about leaving my part-time job, I either mutter something about leaving it “eventually” or say how much I love working that job. I’m paranoid that as soon as I leave one job I’ll be fired from the other job & be SOL. I actually was fired once & ended up not having a job for a few months, since it was so hard finding a decent job that paid enough for my bills. I think that only fueled my work obsession. My two sisters have had terrible times keeping jobs, so my family has kept emphasising my work ethics. Now they’re starting to say that I work too much.

I’m working my entire life away. If I’m not careful I’ll work away the time that I could be spending on education, friends, & relationships.

Taking a huge vacation isn’t really an option for me, since that’s too huge of step right now. I have taken a step & asked to work fewer hours at my other job, but I’m afraid of allowing myself to overwork myself.

When I get up to pee or drink water, I go check my mailbox.

I eat infront of my laptop.

I bring home work and i work even on weekends.
